Michael Donald Root, 62, of Claremont, died Sunday, June 26, 2016 at his home.

He was born November 13, 1953 in Waseca the son of Donald and Arlene (Bauman) Root. Michael married Betty and together they had a son, Jon Michael in 1971. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1974 and was honorably discharged in 1980 as Lance Corporal E-3 specialty gunner. Mike lived in Waseca while working as an insulation installer with Ronny Priebe. He later married Vickie and they had a son, Travis Michael in 1983. They lived in New Richland and he worked as the City Maintenance Technician. Mike and Vickie purchased the Waldorf Cafe which he operated with his mother, Arlene, for 7 years. He then worked for Truth Hardware in Owatonna as a machine operator for 7 years before working for Cybex International in the fabrication department as a machinist. Mike was later promoted to be a working supervisor in the fabrication department.

In 1996, Mike bought a home in Claremont with Sheila Larson and they were later married on October 25, 2014 at the First Presbyterian Church in Claremont. They joined the church in 2009 and have been active members. Mike served as an usher, mowed the lawn, kept an eye on the building in storms and enjoyed helping maintain the facility in any way he could.

In 2010, Mike's heart stopped 2 times and he suffered a severe stroke which left him disabled but didn't stop him from helping his family and friends. He was a warm and loving man with an infectious laugh which he inherited from his father. He loved helping others, dealt with his health problems gracefully and loved playfully teasing others. He also loved deer hunting and fishing. Fishing with his son Travis at Lake George, MN was one of his favorite things to do. The most precious gift and light in his life was his grandson, Harvey. In the last days, little Harvey Michael brought light to his eyes along with laughter and smiles.

He is survived by his wife Sheila Root of Claremont; sons, Jon (and Sabrina) Root of Paris, IL, Travis (and Kathryn) Root of Brownsdale, Eli Rosenau of Owatonna; 7 grandchildren, including Harvey Root, Kassidy Kirtz, River Thompson; brother, Marty (and Karen) Root of Alexandria; sister, Andrea Petzel of Janesville; half brother, Sam Root of Plymouth; step-sister, Connie (and Bert) Berg of New Richland and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Arlene.

Visitation will be at Michaelson Funeral Home Thursday, June 30 from 4pm to 7pm and one hour prior to the service at the church. Funeral services will be held Friday, July 1, 2016 at 2pm at First Presbyterian Church, Claremont. Interment will be in the Hillside Cemetery in Claremont.
