Hugh was born in Corvallis, Oregon, to Austin Velmon Ellis and Minerva Ashby Musgrave, and was the youngest of six children. All are now deceased.
Hugh lived in Oregon until 1936. He started his long career with Sears, Roebuck and Co. in Portland, OR in 1934 and was transferred to San Jose, CA in 1936. He worked his way up the corporate ladder by holding various positions in Sears stores in California. He spent many happy years as the Assistant Manager in the Modesto, CA store where he made many life-long friends.
During his career and after retirement, he was always active in civic affairs.
In 1965 Hugh was transferred to Los Angeles as the Manager of the commercial and contract sales division covering seven western states plus Alaska and Hawaii. He retired in 1971.
Hugh met Marie Worley in San Jose and they married on March 29, 1941. This past March they celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary in St. George with many of their family members.
Marie preceded him in death on June 22, 2006.
They were the parents of four children, two boys, Jerry and Richard, both deceased; and two girls, Loene (Ed) Arbuckle of St. George, UT and Janet Christensen of Lehi, UT. They are also survived by four grandsons and ten great-grandchildren.
Hugh loved sports. In his youth he lettered in track and field, but his great love was golf. He played his last game just two months ago with his three grandsons, Mike, Jim and Dan, at Hobble Creek near Spanish Fork, UT.
Funeral services will be held Friday, November 17, 2006, 11 a.m., Mulberry LDS Chapel, St. George, UT.
A visitations will be held Friday, 9:30-10:30 a.m., prior to services at the chapel.
Interment will be in the Tonaquint Cemetery under the direction of Metcalf Mortuary, UT. (435) 673-4221.
