ELKHART, IN — Robert E. Spencer, 77, of Elkhart, passed away Friday, June 24, 2016 at Kindred Healthcare-Valley View, Elkhart.
He was born Sept. 24, 1938, in Gary, to Robert W. and Oneta (Roberts) Spencer.
He married Mary R. Heiliger on Sept. 25, 1993, in Elkhart. She died on Dec. 31, 2010.
Surviving are a son, Todd Spencer of Montezuma; two daughters, Joyce A. Frost of Dowagiac, MI., and Jo-Ellen Foster of Montezuma; two stepdaughters, Debbie Cox of Elkhart and Mary Jo Blosser of Goshen; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a brother, Richard Spencer of Griffith; and two sisters, Debbie Lee Slayton of Griffith and Sandra Woolwine of Kingman.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Lawrence and two sisters, JoAnne Woolwine and Lana Kay Kuhns and his parents.
Robert served in the U.S. Army and retired from Glavel Bus in industrial maintenance. He previously worked in maintenance for Ivy Tech in Terre Haute. He was the former Montezuma,Indiana town manager. He loved woodworking and cooking.
Visitation was from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 30, at Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home. Funeral services were at 5 p.m. Friday, July 1, also at the funeral home with Pastor Timothy Wesco officiating. Military honors were the concluding part of the service at the funeral home.
Cremation followed services and he was laid to rest with his wife, Mary, in Rice Cemetery.
Memorials may be given to United Cancer Services of Elkhart County.
