Harvey Pate Carter, age 88, passed away peacefully at home in Knoxville, Tennessee, on Saturday, February 13, 2016. Harvey was born in Friendship, Tennessee and later, he and his family moved to Memphis where he attended Humes High School. After graduation, he attended Freed-Hardeman College in Henderson, Tennessee where he earned an Associate of Arts Degree and then David Lipscomb College in Nashville for his Bachelor of Arts Degree. He then attended Vanderbilt University where he earned his Master's Degree and Ph.D. in the study of Mathematics. Harvey served in the United States Army from 1951 to 1953, where he taught Mathematics in the Quartermaster Corps' School at Ft. Lee, Virginia. While earning his advanced degrees, he taught as an Associate Professor of Mathematics at David Lipscomb College. He and his family moved to Knoxville in 1957 when he began working in the Mathematics Division at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. He also continued teaching as an Associate Professor of Mathematics at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. In his career, Harvey was Director of the Mathematics Division at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Director of Computer Sciences for Union Carbide Corporation, Nuclear Division, and Deputy Director of Computer Sciences and Telecommunications for Martin Marietta Energy Systems before he retired in 1993. Harvey was a member of Laurel Church of Christ, Knoxville, Tennessee, where he had served as Song Leader and as a Deacon. Through his church, he helped establish the Christian Student Center on the campus of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, as one of the Founding Boosters. Harvey, his wife, Bettye, and his son, Philip, raised and showed Doberman Pinschers and Miniature Pinschers, founding the Classic Kennels lineage for both of these breeds. He also was a founding member and officer of the Knoxville Dog Training Club. Harvey was well-liked and well-respected in his field by his peers, he also loved and was loved very much by his family, by his church family, and by his pets.

Harvey is preceded in death by his parents, Harvey and Ora Lee Pate Carter, his wife, Bettye Jo Brown Carter, and sister, Miriam Carter Leggett. He is survived by his son, Charles Philip Carter, M.D., J.D.; and daughter-in-law, Ann DeGroff Carter, M.D.; grandsons, Matthew Philip Carter (his wife Nicole Komara Carter) and Timothy Pate Carter; and great-grandsons, Noah Gregory Carter and Adam Philip Carter.

The family will receive friends Friday, February 19, 2016, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Berry Highland Funeral Home, on Kingston Pike in Bearden. Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 20, 2016, at 12:00 p.m. at Laurel Church of Christ, Kingston Pike at Cherokee Boulevard, with interment to follow at Highland Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society of the Tennessee Valley, P.O. Box 51723, Knoxville, TN 37950
