He was the son of Solomon and Lavinia (Craig) Jones. He apprenticed first to an unknown Concord NH watchmaker, later working for the E. Howard Watch & Clock Company in Roxbury MA, until the Civil War. He served in the Union Army, Company A, 13th Massachusetts Regiment. He mustered out a private, 1 August 1864 at that time his residence listed as Boston MA.

He was a Mason and a member of Converse Lodge. In 1868 he formed a partnership with Charles Lewis Kidder, and removed to Europe where he began what would later be known as the International Watch Company (IWC). In 1876 he sold his company and returned to the United States where he was an inventor of both watch mechanisms and steam machinery. He lived in New York City and other places finally moving to Somerville MA where he died. His cremated remains were buried in Mt. Auburn Cemetery. He married Susan P. Jones, daughter of Jeremiah B. & Betsey (Bragg) Jones. They did not have any children.
