Janice C. George January 16, 1928 May 7, 2016 Janice C. George, 88, of Chesapeake, VA, died May 7, 2016. She was born January 16, 1928 in Seminole, Oklahoma to the late Duffie William and Lillie Elizabeth (Berry) Chenault. She was predeceased by her husband, John L. George of State College, PA. She is survived by her brother, Donald Chenault (Elizabeth) of Malvern, AR; her sister, Betsy Gerrish (Jim) of Colorado Springs, CO; children, D. Neal George (Julie) of Norfolk, VA and Laura E. Sargent (Edward) of Chesapeake, VA; step children, Twig C. George (David Pittenger) of Cockeysville, MD, J. Craig George (Cyd Hann) of Barrow, AK and T. Luke George (Carol Ann Moorehead) of Fort Collins, CO; and grandchildren, Rebecca, Caity, Luke, Sam, Zoe, Hunter, Olivia, Jonathon, Laura and Ai Li. Janice graduated with a BS in Education from Arkansas State Teachers College in 1950. She taught high school home economics in Arkansas for three years. She worked toward equality in education and strove to correct racial inequities. Janice then went to Pennsylvania State University where she earned a master's degree in Family Economics and Home Management, graduating in 1955. She joined the faculty at Penn State, teaching courses and running the home management houses. She took pride that her course "Work of the Home" was popular with Human Development majors and architectural students. She became the associate professor-in-charge of Human Development and Family Studies, a renowned interdisciplinary program. Janice dedicated herself to assisting students. She was a favorite academic advisor. She was honored by Penn State for her 35 years of public educational service before her retirement in 1986. She was an excellent seamstress, enjoyed puzzles, travel, reading, bowling, genealogy and family visits. In her later years she was pleased to visit all 50 of the United States. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 2, 2016, at 2 p.m. in the Blue and White room of the Best Western Plus University Park Inn and Suites, 115 Premier Dr., State College, PA 16801 with burial to follow at Centre Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. prior to the service.
