Obituary: Pal-Item, 2/3/2016

Robert C. (Bob) Whipple, age 90 of Richmond passed away peacefully Monday (February 1, 2016) at his home of many years. He was born on November 7, 1925 in Connersville, Indiana to William and Jessie Halstead Whipple. Bob proudly served the US Army Air Corp during WWII in the South Pacific before returning home to marry Betty Remmler on April 15, 1946. Together, Bob and Betty spent their 69 years of marriage living in the Richmond area. Bob had a career spanning 44 years at the Knollenberg's Department Store where his famous whistle could be heard daily, echoing throughout the store. He was a longtime member of the First Christian Church. Bob was a lifetime member, former President and Melvin Jones award winner of the Richmond area Noon Lions Club. His efforts to revitalize the downtown area left their mark on the community. In addition he was very active by serving on many boards including Dunn Mental Health, Interfaith, Scouting, and numerous other not-for-profit agencies.

Outside of work and community service he enjoyed wood working, spending time with his grandchildren, and sharing stories with friends over a glass of iced tea on the back porch. He will be remembered for his friendliness, his story telling, his sense of humor and of course his fudge making.

Survivors include his wife Betty; daughter Nancy (Gary) Whitney; grandchildren Gregory (Cassey) Whipple, Jason (Lesli) Whitney, Christy (Brian) Mousa and Kimberly (Brad) Walton; great grandchildren Michael, Nicholas and Aubrey Whipple, Anderson Whitney, Remi and Hattie Mousa, Peyton and Taylor Walton; sister Violet Wagener; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Robert is also preceded in death by his son Michael and daughter in law Sherry.
