James L. Winton was born 1808 in Rhea County, Tennessee, to George Winton and Catherine Kate Shultz. James father Captain George Winton head a Wagon train from Mayfield, Graves County Kentucky they rolled into Fort Smith Arkansas November 16, 1833. That was the night the stars fell, a meteorite shower that was long remembered by these travelers. One family named the Jones had a baby born that night and was named Isaac Jones whom would one day be the brother-n-law of James Winton. There are a number of stores about this wagon train and very interesting to read.
James Married Minerva Marisou Jones in Arkansas some time around 1836. Minerva was the daughter of Isaac Jones and Mary Ann "Polly" Pirtle. James and Minerva had a least nine Children. In 1870 James was head of house hold with His two youngest children, Patience Josephine Winton and Kinnerson Landerdale Winton. He must have lost Minerva by then. Family historians say he died in December of 1876.
