William Usher “Bill” Cates, 90, of Port Charlotte, Florida, and formerly of Mayfield, Kentucky, passed away Wednesday, June 22, 2016, at the Douglas Jacobson State Veterans Nursing Home in Port Charlotte. He was a World War II Army veteran.

Cates is survived by his wife, Mary Ann Pryor Cates, the Windsor of Venice, Florida; two sons, Greg (Charissa) Cates of Paducah and Steve (Shawna “Shay” Sulzer) Cates of Okeechobee, Florida; one daughter, Susan Rachles of Venice; one brother, George L. Cates of Cuba, Kentucky; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents Fred L. Cates and Fannie Williams Cope, and one stepsister Dorothy Lyles.
