Lester J. Martin, 88, of Albion, NE passed away Friday, June 24, 2016 at the Good Samaritan Society-Albion.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 28, 2016 at the United Methodist Church in Albion, NE with Rev. Janet Burgel officiating.

Interment will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery in Albion, NE. Visitation will be from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Monday, at Levander Funeral Home in Albion, NE.

Lester James Martin, the son of Lester Oliver and Gladys Irene (Hill) Martin, was born October 28, 1927 at the family's farm in the Plum Creek Township, Boone County, NE.

He attended elementary school at Rural District 13 and graduated from Albion High School in 1946. Following high school, he attended Colorado State University, studying agriculture.

On February 18, 1950, Lester was united in marriage to Janice Marian Erickson at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Denver, Colorado.

Following their marriage, the couple farmed near Cedar Rapids, NE and on a farm south of Albion, before moving to the family farm west of Albion where they raised their children: Linda, Laura, Leslie, Licia and Eric.

They farmed and raised livestock until retiring. They continued living on the farm until moving into town in 2010.

In March of 2012, Lester entered the Wolf Memorial Good Samaritan Nursing Home where the staff provided him with excellent care.

Lester was a Lifetime member of the Albion United Methodist Church, receiving his 75 year pin several few years ago.

He and Jan were members of a dinner club and card club for many years, along with the Harmony Squares square dance club.

He served on the church council and District 13 school board, and was a member of Masonic Lodge #78 in Albion.

He was a kind and gentle man and had many hobbies and passions in life including a love for aviation, snow skiing, his many dogs he had over the years, reading, history and was intrigued with space exploration and the NASA Apollo missions.

He attended many air shows and fly-ins with his family in Omaha, Grand Island and many other places. He took flying lessons, soloing in 1987.

After retiring, he enjoyed helping his sons-in-law with harvest and taking an annual ride in the combine.

He and Jan spent time golfing at the Spalding Cottonwood Greens, attending grandchildren's sports and activities, going on bus trips with their square dance friends and traveling to Hawaii and Alaska. Most of all, Lester loved and adored his wife Janice.

Lester is survived by his wife of 66 years: Janice of Albion, NE; four daughters: Linda (Lewis) Rogers of Pawnee City, NE; Laura (Rev. Gordon) Paulsen of Mead, KS; Leslie (Tedd) Kaufman of Newman Grove, NE; Licia (Kevin) Kunzman of Albion, NE; one son: Eric (Joy) Martin of Plattsmouth, NE; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one brother: Gary (Jackie) Martin of Grand Island, NE;

He was preceded in death by: his parents; grandson Chet Rogers; and son-in-law Gunter Bieber.
