Niles died of Paralysis at age 76 years, 5 months.

He was a mason by trade, but that was not his middle name, as one record maintains. Some records also have his name spelled as "Miles", or "Nile".

Surname spellings "How" and "Howe" used interchangeably, for all family members, usually more at the whim of the clerk than at the preference of the family, more often persistent as "How" in long-resident towns like Methuen, while changing to "Howe" on their moving elsewhere new, at least into the U.S. civil war, most often "How" before that, but almost always "Howe" after that.

His will was recorded with him ultimately self-identifying as "Niles Howe", as does his gravestone.
