Joseph was not one of the "orginial signers", but was one of the early settlers of Woodbury, Connecticut
and for eighty year afterward held a prominent position in his town.
He went to Woodbury as a child and passed through various grades of the military service to the rank of
Coronel. He was a Representative for thirty-two sessions of the General Court, Town Clerk twenty-eight years.
Justice of the quorum fourteen years and Judge of Probate thirty years.
On his 100th birthday, he rode his hors through the streets of Woodburyl That feat, however, was marred by
the fact that he did not alight but fell from his horse. He died age 101 and seven months.
