John Richard Oakley DMD, 86, of Bardstown, died peacefully Thursday, June 23, 2016. He was born April 13, 1930. He attended Bardstown City Schools, and graduated from Columbia Military Academy, Centre College, and the University of Louisville where he was a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon. He graduated from the University of Louisville Dental School where he was a member of Delta Sigma Delta.

After graduation, he joined the U.S. Air Force and practiced dentistry as a Captain for two years. He and his wife Dolores returned to Bardstown where he had his dental practice from 1958-1995. He was a past president of the Kiwanas Club and a former deacon at the Bardstown Baptist Church.
Whether you knew him as Dr. John, Johnny, Uncle Johnny, Dad or Papaw, he was a force to be reckoned with. An avid fisherman for most of his life, and a proud member of the Juniper Club, he adored the outdoors. He was often found in his boat fishing, in a field dove hunting, at the range shooting skeet or outside enjoying a cigar or his pipe. He also loved keeping tabs on the racetrack, always appreciated watching a good game of baseball, and traveled anywhere when given the chance! He was always willing to tell you a joke, often one you had heard for the umpteenth time!

His family would like to thank the staff, including the nurses, therapists, and aides at Life Care Center of Bardstown, the staff at Flaget Memorial Hospital, Dr. Kalista Hughes, Dr. Fredericka Lockett, Dr. Mikey Anderson, and Dr. Charles Scoggins. Also, thank you to those loved ones that came by to visit and spend just a little of their day with him.

He was preceded in death by his father, William Joseph Oakley DDS; his mother, Clara Wells Oakley; one sister, Clara Jennelle Dearen; and one brother, William Oakley, DMD.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, the former Dolores Cornell; two daughters, Karen Sweezey Jones and Millie Neff, both of Louisville; one son, John Oakley Jr. (Kim) of Louisville; one brother, Joseph Oakley DMD (Mary) of Worcester, Mass.; eight grandchildren, Elizabeth (Michael), Kent, Kristen (Matt), Jack, Patrick, Parker, Greyson, Adair; three great-grandchildren, Kate, Abby, Will; and many loving nieces and nephews.

The funeral is 11 a.m. Monday, June 27, 20116, at the Houghlin-Greenwell Funeral Home with burial in the Bardstown Cemetery.

Visitation is 3-8 p.m. Sunday, June 26, 2016, and after 8:30 a.m. Monday at the Houghlin-Greenwell Funeral Home, 1475 New Shepherdsville Road in Bardstown.

In lieu of flowers the family asked that donations be made to the Bardstown Baptist Church Building Fund.
Pallbearers are Kent Sweezey, Parker Neff, Jack Oakley, Patrick Oakley, Dr. Ron Shrewsbury and Ken Hatfield.
