Civil War Confederate Army Officer. A native of Switzerland, he was a Captain in the Confederate Army, and commander of Camp Sumter, the notorious Confederate prison at Andersonville, Georgia. Blamed for being responsible for the terrible conditions there, he was subsequently hanged for war crimes.
