Gladys Juanita Hicks, 97 years old, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, Friday, June 17, 2016 at Journey Care Hospice, Barrington, IL. She was born January 10, 1919 in Ivanhoe, VA, the daughter of the late Robert and Nora (Newman) Bartlett. Mrs. Hicks was formerly of Jonesborough, Tennessee. She was a member of Church of Jesus, Johnson City, TN and spent many years as a Sunday school teacher and Bible study teacher. Her life's verse in Proverbs Chapter 3 Verses 5 and 6. Gladys was a devoted homemaker, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great great grandmother. They all loved and enjoyed her wonderful cooking and baking.

She is survived by her three children: James S. Tate, Maurice (Betty) Tate, and Leola (Jim) Nottingham; 10 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; 11 great great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Gladys was preceded in death by her first husband, James "Massie" Tate; second husband, Jack Hicks; and seven siblings, Io, Lissie, Clarence, Berthal, Lura Mae, Anna Marie, and Robert.

The graveside service and interment will be conducted at 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, June 22, 2016 at Monte Vista Memorial Park. Those who wish to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at Appalachian Funeral Home at 9:30 A.M. to travel together in procession to the cemetery.
