Arthur Augustus Polhemus was born in 1869 and grew up in Nyack, Rockland County, New York. By 1900, he was in Brooklyn, New York where he was the foreman of an ice company. By 1935, he was superintendent of the Knickerbocker Ice Company, the largest ice supplier to New York City, Philadelphia and other northeastern cities, harvesting ice from Rockland Lake near Nyack.

He and his wife Ann Orvetta Ashdown had five children: Edith Polhemus Andrews, Gertrude Polhemus Williams, Grace Polhemus (died young), and Arthur Ellsworth Polhemus.
