Mrs. Elizabeth Moore Butzner Tankard, widow of Baxley Trower Tankard of Franktown, Virginia, died Sunday, June 19, 2016, at Westminster Canterbury of the Blue Ridge where she made her home in recent years.Mrs. Tankard, the daughter of the late William Walker Butzner and Anna Dunaway Butzner, and was born in Fredericksburg, Virginia June 9, 1923.

She attended Longwood College. After college she worked in New York City, Cleveland, Ohio, and then Charlottesville where she became the second female stockbroker licensed in the state of Virginia employed in the firm of Wiley and Thornhill. During those years she was active in St. Paul's Memorial Church, the Farmington Country Club and the University League.

In 1965 she married Baxley Tankard, a lawyer on the Eastern Shore whom she met through friends from Longwood. For the next forty-eight years she made her home at Pine Cove, Franktown, Virginia. There she was active in The Garden Club of the Eastern Shore opening their home for garden week several times. She was also active in Hungars Episcopal Church and was a champion golfer at the Eastern Shore Yacht and Country Club.

In addition to enjoying the pleasures of boating and the shore, she and Baxley enjoyed extensive travels. During those years she maintained a second home in Charlottesville to visit family and friends. After his death in 2013 she moved to Westminster Canterbury of the Blue Ridge on a permanent basis.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her brother, William Walker Butzner, Jr. (Catharine) of Fredericksburg; and her sister, Nancy Butzner Leavell (Byrd) of Charlottesville.

She is survived by her four nieces and a nephew, Anna Moore Butzner of Grand Rapids, Michigan, Anne Leavell Reynolds (Herbert) of Hershey, Pennsylvania, Betsy Butzner Greene (James), Byrd Stuart Leavell, Jr. (Mary), and Lucie Leavell Vogel, all of Charlottesville.

Services will be held 3 p.m.Saturday, June 25, 2016,at St. Paul's Memorial Church, 1700 University Ave., Charlottesville, Virginia, with the family welcoming friends in the Parish Hall following. Burial will be held at the Fredericksburg Confederate Cemetery 10 a.m.Saturday morning in Fredericksburg, Virginia.In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to St. Paul's Church, The Garden Club of Virginia, 12 E. Franklin St., Richmond, VA 23219 or a charity of your choice. Friends may sign the online register book at www.hillandwood.com.
