When he arrived in Vietnam 16 August 1965 he was assigned to A Company, 2nd Battalion, 7th Calvary, 1st Calvary Division, USARV. Gerald died as a result of gunshot wounds to head, chest and back when the battalion encountered NVA hostile forces at LZ Albany and 7 kilometers east northeast of Chu Prong Mountain (Hill732) in Pleiku Province.
