Professional Hockey Player. A native of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Branigan played the position of Defense for the National Hockey League's New York Americans from 1940 to 1942. The 5'11, and 190lbs, Branigan also played for the East Kildonan Bisons, Winnipeg RCAF (while serving in World War II), Springfield Indians, Indianapolis Capitals, Hershey Bears, Providence Reds, Washington Redskins, and the Eastern Hockey's League's New York Rovers of which he was both player and head coach from 1959 to 1960. A member of the 1956 AHL Second All-Star team, Branigan played in a total of 26 NHL career games, scored one goal, and had three points. Branigan retired from hockey in 1960. A longtime resident of Lincoln, Rhode Island, Branigan was also a local and very popular sportsman. He was an avid golfer, and devoted much of his time to developing young athlete's appreciation of hockey. Also a successful businessman in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, he was the subject of many of artist Frank Lanning's popular sports caricatures that appeared in the Providence Journal. A recipient of several awards and honours, Branigan was awarded the Words Unlimited Award for special service to his community, the Rhode Island Reds Booster Club Award, and was inducted into the Rhode Island Reds Hall of Fame in 1970. Branigan passed away two days after his 73rd birthday.
