John Burris Ashlock was born 10 September 1883 in Cumberland county, Kentucky to his father Alvin Cullwell Ashlock (1858-1941) and mother Martha Watson(1857-1936). John married Cora Deits on 24 December 1905 in Newton County, Arkansas. Cora died about 1920 leaving John a widower. John then married Thelma Young (daughter of Bucy Wolford Young and Cora Alice Wilson)on 15 January 1926 in Swain, Newton County, Arkansas. On 3 December 1928 a son, Roger James Ashlock, was born in Jasper, Arkansas. On 1 April 1931, John's wife Thelma died in childbirth. She is buried in the Jasper Cemetery as well. The lost child is presumed buried with her. John married again, to Geneva Laughter on 3 December 1936 in Newton county, Arkansas. John and Geneva divorced sometime before 1946 because John married a fourth and final time to Amanda Harmon 1946 on 8 January.
