Businessman, Philanthropist, Humanitarian, Son of William Henry and Mary Jay Schieffelin. educated at Trinity School, Tivoli Columbia College School of Mines 1887, Munich University 1889, Ph.D. Chemist for Schieffelin & Co. 1889. William became a member of the firm 1890, on February 5, 1891 William married Maria Louisa Shepard; he then became vice-president of corporation in 1903, president in 1906; he was a trustee of Hampton Institute, of the Muskogee Institute; a president of Armstrong Association, a manager the American Bible Society, president American Church Missionary Society, vestryman at St. George’s Church NYC, Municipal Civil Service Commission 1896, captain and regimental adjutant 12the NY Volunteers Spanish War 1898, president Citizens’ Union 1908. Fellow of the London Chemical Society, member American Chemical Society, Society of Chemical Industry. a crusader for government reform, education for African Americans, and other humanitarian causes.
