Brenda Jo Lytle Thornton passed away Monday, June 20, 2016, at Lexington Medical Lodge in Farmersville, Texas, after a lengthy illness. Her funeral service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday, June 24, at Highland Terrace Baptist Church with Rev. Larry Jordan and Rev. Royce Litchfield officiating. Burial will be in Memoryland Memorial Park.
Visitation will be Thursday, June 23, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Coker-Mathews Funeral Home.
Brenda was born Nov. 27, 1943, in Greenville, Texas, to Billie Joe and Pauline Smith Lytle.
Brenda attended Peniel School from first to eighth grades before going to high school at Greenville Senior High where she graduated in 1961. She loved her 1961 classmates and loved talking with them and sharing memories about her high school years.
Brenda was employed in several different jobs during her lifetime, starting with her first job at Clark Drug Store when she was in high school. She was also employed at First Greenville National Bank, E-Systems, Houston Elementary School, The City of Greenville, the office of Justice of the Peace, Merrick Money, and at Raytheon in Greenville. Brenda also worked for several years for Kelley Services doing temporary jobs in Greenville and San Jose, Calif.
Brenda married Thomas Thornton in 1981. She enjoyed keeping her flower garden with Tom, cooking for her family and friends and she loved being Gran-Gran to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Brenda was a member of Highland Terrace Baptist Church and the Shepherd's Flock Sunday School Class.
She is survived by her husband, Thomas Thornton of Greenville; three sons, Kendall and Lisa Murphy of Merit, David Murphy of Celeste and Christopher Murphy of Greenville; six grandchildren, Kenny Murphy of Greenville, Christa and Andrew Poindexter of Fate, Casey, Mitch and Ashley Murphy of Celeste and Rachel and Sammy Townes of Texarkana; eight great-grandchildren; one sister, Tammie and Donnie Wade of Princeton; two nieces, Lauren and Erin Floyd of Dallas; two aunts, Janie Morse of Lindale and Sue Terry of Greenville; one uncle, Rex Lytle of Greenville; and numerous cousins and extended family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two uncles and one aunt.
Pallbearers will be her sons, David Murphy, Christopher Murphy and Kendall Murphy; grandsons Kenny Murphy and Andrew Poindexter and cousins Donnie Money, Rick Morse and Randy Morse.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Greenville High School Class of 1961.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in her memory to The Alzheimer's Association, 3001 Knox Street, No. 200, Dallas, TX 75205.
