Mary VanAtta Hall is the daughter of Gearshum VanAtta and Sarah Caroline Palmer VanAtta and born in Illinois. With her family, she walked all the way from Illinois to Linn County, Oregon via the Oregon Trail in 1852 with the Macy Train. Her grandson, Earl Otho Coop often told proudly how his "grandmother walked the whole way."

While in Linn County, she met her husband, Eslum Monroe Hall and they married 02 Nov 1856. Within a few years, Eslum and Mary along with Mary's family migrated to Brush Prairie, Clark County, Washington. The story goes that there were too many heathen's in the area. Eslum and Mary had 11 children all together. She died in Brush Prairie, Clark County, WA.
