Mary Thelma Wolverton was born Sept. 3, 1903 in Rogersville, Greene County, MO. She was the daughter of Archibald B. Wolverton (1876-1949) and Mary Alice (Pickel) Wolverton (1884-1980).

She was raised near Hopkins, Nodaway County, MO., and graduated from Bedford High School, Bedford, IA. Thelma taught at Oak Grove rural school in Iowa before marrying John Merrill Chilcote in October 1927. Merrill died in 1983.

The couple lived in St. Joseph, MO., where her husband was managing editor of the St. Joseph News-Press for many years.

Thelma was a life member of the Pony Express Historical Association and a volunteer for many years at the Pattee House Museum in St. Joseph, MO. She was also an active member of the National Pony Express Association. Thelma belonged to the Women's Press Club, Fortnightly Musical Club, Runcie Club and the Northwest Missouri Press Association.

Also preceding her in death were her parents, Archibald and Mary Alice Wolverton; a sister, Jeanne Wolverton; and three brothers, Rolland, Clarence Jackson and Ted Wolverton.

Survivors included: a daughter, Carol Duncan, Kansas City, MO; one son, Gary Chilcote of St. Joseph, MO.; a sister Marguerite Salter, Omaha, NE; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Thelma died Sunday, August 3, 1997 at an Overland Park, KS., health care center after a seven month illness.

She had the following siblings:
Rolland (1907-1980) married Juanita Vella Warner (1915- );
Clarence Jackson (1910-1982);
Ted Thomas (1914-1985);
Jeanne Ruth (1917-1925);
Margurite Joy (1925- ) married William Salter.
