She was born Sept. 18, 1921, in Portland, the daughter of Felix and Anna (DeSanctis) Orlando. She was raised in Portland and attended Portland schools.
She married Robert S. Sterling on Sept. 4, 1949 and made their home on Munjoy Hill in Portland. In later years they moved to the North Deering area and finally resided with their daughter and son-in-law's family. She worked for the Portland School Department, mostly at Jack Junior High.
They raised two children and enjoyed 54 years of wonderful marriage until his death in Aug. 2003. She leaves a legacy of a very close knit family and will be lovingly remembered as a caring mother, grandmother (Nonni), loving aunt, and loyal friend.
She was predeceased by her parents; her two sisters, Sistine Manganello and Edith Johnson, a brother Anthony Orlando; and her loving husband.
A period of visitation for Sylva will be held this Tuesday, Aug. 6 from 5 to 8 p.m., at the Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St. Portland. A Mass of Christian Burial for Sylvia will be celebrated at 9 a.m. on Wednesday Aug. 7, at St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church, 72 Federal St., Portland.
