She was a Daughter of Clarence and Bathsheba Smith Merrill. She was one of 15 children and the granddaughter of pioneer settlers George Albert and Bathsheba Bigler Smith,Members of the first company of Latter Day Saints to reach the Salt Lake Valley in 1847. George Albert Smith was a church president and First Counselor to Brigham Young Who was the church's second president. She was a mother of nine children. Funeral Services were held at the Kenwood Ward Chapel at 3080 South 1765 East on Friday November 28, 1969 at 12 Noon. A Viewing was held at the Deseret Mortuary at 36 East 7th South on Thursday November 27, 1969 From 6-8 PM and One Hour Prior To Serives At The Church. Burial followed at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park next to her husband Stephen in the Richards Family Plot.
