Irene Smith Merrill Richards who was the wife of Stephen Longstoth Richards who was First Couselor of the First Presidency of the Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter Day Saints and Founder of Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park died at 6:35 PM in a salt lake hospital of Natural Causes. She was 93 years old. Mrs Richards who was honored about a year prior to her death as the oldest living choir member of the Tabernacle Choir had lived in Salt Lake City since 1884. She maintained her own apartment and enjoyed good health. She had been a patient in the hospital since November 22, 1969 after suffering a Heart Attack. As the wife of President Richards she traveled throughout the world on assignments with her husband. They celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary on Febuary 21, 1959. They were married on Febuary 21, 1900 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. He died on May 19, 1959. She joined the tabernacle choir at age 14 and was the only surviving member of the choir that sang at the Chicago World's Fair in 1893. She had served in various auxillaries and was president of Ensign Stake Relief Society in the late 1920s.
She was a Daughter of Clarence and Bathsheba Smith Merrill. She was one of 15 children and the granddaughter of pioneer settlers George Albert and Bathsheba Bigler Smith,Members of the first company of Latter Day Saints to reach the Salt Lake Valley in 1847. George Albert Smith was a church president and First Counselor to Brigham Young Who was the church's second president. She was a mother of nine children. Funeral Services were held at the Kenwood Ward Chapel at 3080 South 1765 East on Friday November 28, 1969 at 12 Noon. A Viewing was held at the Deseret Mortuary at 36 East 7th South on Thursday November 27, 1969 From 6-8 PM and One Hour Prior To Serives At The Church. Burial followed at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park next to her husband Stephen in the Richards Family Plot.
