Rossville man succumbs to injuries

Services set for motorcycle crash victim

BY DANA SCHAUMBURG

ROSSVILLE — A 25-year-old Rossville man died Saturday night from injuries he suffered in a motorcycle accident Oct. 1.

Eric Dyke died at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana with his parents, Sam Dyke and Celeste Smith, by his side.

"His father and I never left the whole time," Smith said, adding Dyke's sister traveled from Iraq to see him after the accident.

Dyke was injured in an accident at West Newell Road and North Vermilion Street. The driver of the car that struck his motorcycle reported blinding sun and was ticketed for failure to yield.

Dyke's girlfriend, Danielle Lloyd, was a passenger on the motorcycle and also was taken to Carle to be treated. She was listed in fair condition the day after the accident.

But Dyke spent the first part of his time in the hospital on a ventilator.

"He opened his eyes," Smith said, adding she doesn't think he was aware his family was there. "He was breathing on his own for quite some time."

Smith will take her son back to Springfield, Ohio, where he grew up. The family will have a service there Friday, with burial on Saturday.

For those who knew Dyke here, there will be visitation and a prayer service Wednesday night at the Renner-Wikoff Chapel in Urbana.

"He had many, many friends," his mother said. "They need closure, so we wanted to have a service there for them."

Jennifer Price, Dyke's co-worker at the Red Lobster in Danville and a friend, knows the family has been through a lot, so she collected donations for them.

A car wash Oct. 14 brought in a little more than $400, and a fund is set up at First National Bank in Danville to help with expenses. His co-workers also collected money for Dyke and Lloyd.

"We're still collecting money, probably for a while," she said.

COMING UP

Illinois visitation for Eric Dyke will be 5-7 p.m. Wednesday with a 7 p.m. prayer service at Renner-Wikoff Chapel, 1900 Philo Road, Urbana. For more information, call the funeral home at 367-1122.
