Bernard Campbell (Buck) Cook, 94, of Roanoke passed away on Sunday, June 19, 2016. He was the oldest son of Bernard and Frankie Campbell Cook. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean Atkinson Cook; daughter, Rebecca Cook Thomas; sister, Annie Virginia Cook Aldridge; brothers-in-law, William Atkinson, Jr. and James Atkinson and sister-in-law, Janet Craighead. He is survived by his siblings, Rebecca Cook Locke, of Roanoke; William Thomas and Priscilla Cook, of Midlothian; sister-in-law, Mildred Atkinson, of Roanoke and brother-in-law, Robert Craighead, of Salem. He is also survived by his children, William B. Cook and his wife, Anne Panella, of Pembroke; Terry L. Cook and her husband, Joseph Praskievicz, of Blacksburg and Cynthia J. Cook and her husband, Greg Galbreath, of Eggleston; his five grandchildren, Riley, Myra and Nicole Horton; Kira Cook and husband, Michael Epling and Conan Cook and wife, Kala as well as five great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and family friends. Buck attended Jefferson High School and was in the original class of 1943. He graduated from VPI in 1942 on an accelerated program. He went to OCS school in Miami Beach, Florida to obtain 2nd Lieutenant Rank in the United States Army Air Corp. Since he graduated with a BS in Aeronautical Engineering he went to Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio for wartime service. Following the war he worked for Glenn L. Martin in Baltimore, MD until a layoff brought him back to Roanoke where he went to work for N & W and married. He was recalled into the Air Force as captain during the Korean War and moved his family back to Dayton, Ohio. He returned to the N & W where he would remain until his retirement in 1982. He and his family mad many friends and have fond memories of their many moves to Princeton, WVA, Bellevue, OH, Moberly, MO and Norfolk, VA. Buck and his family returned to Roanoke in 1972 where he would retire from the Norfolk and Southe rn Corp as Superintendent Shops-Car. Following his retirement, Buck and Jean spent much of their time at their beach cottage in Kill Devil Hills, NC where they graciously entertained family and friends. A graveside service will be held at Evergreen Burial Park on Wednesday, June 22, 2016 at 11:00 A.M. with Rev. Kathleen Miko officiating. Visitation will be on Tuesday, June 21, 2016 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Oakey’s Roanoke Chapel. In lieu of flowers, a charity of your choice. Arrangements by Oakey’s Roanoke Chapel.
