Cpl. Kyle W. Powells' of Colorado Springs, parents, both retired Army are very proud of their son and his fellow marines for choosing to serve his country during 3 tours of duty in Iraq. Kyle graduated from Cheyenne Mountain High School in 2003. He wanted to serve his country and he acted on that as soon as he could. In the Marines, he trained as a combat engineer. In Iraq, he helped build bunkers that defended troops from bombs, rockets and mortars and was awarded the Navy Achievement Medal for building a structure that stopped two rocket-propelled grenade attacks. He loved being a Marine and it seemed to be his niche in life. He was an avid hiker who legged his way across nearly 300 miles of Colorado trails on Boy Scout expeditions. He was a role model for younger Scouts, helping them learn the outdoor skills of scouting while showing them how to be successful in life. He made the rank of Eagle Scout in 2001, and there was no secret to his success, he was just a hard worker. He is survived by his parents, David and Nancy Powell, and a sister, all of Colorado Springs. He was 21.
