Frances' father, Lt. Benjamin F. Garrett was a noted soldier in civil war, lawyer & educator, from Pittsfield, Pike, Illinois. In the early 1870's he removed to Pike Co., Missouri, he farmed and raised cattle. Then onward to Newton County, Missouri. He then moved to Douglas Co, Kansas. He and his wife, Ann Elizabeth (Adams) Garrett, raised 3 children, Frances J, John M and Marshall A Garrett.
after many years he and Ann removed to Covina California and was a noted horticulturist, and held office in this community.
Frances J (Garrett) followed in her father's foot steps and became an educator herself in Alton, Illinois. She married WDW Barnard of Alton, Illinois in 1905. Mr Barnard's first wife died in 1901, leaving two young sons for Mr Barnard to raise. She was step-mother to William James Barnard & Frederick Stebbins Barnard.
Frances died at St Luke's hospital in St Louis, but had lived in the Atlton community the past 25 yrs of her life.
