Hobart M. Horton was born in the Black Oak Community, near Sulphur Springs, January 25, 1905.
He died in Trinity, Sunday, Feb. 6, 2005. He celebrated his 100th birthday last month. He attended East Texas Teachers College in Commerce. Mr. Horton taught school in Haskell and Stonewall Counties where he met Ada Mae Gunnels. They married on April 24, 1926. She preceded him in death on January 28, 1986. H. M. moved to Lubbock, Jan. 3, 1943. He was baptized, July 16, 1965 and joined Trinity Baptist Church. He worked in construction before joining the Army Air Corps, as a Civilian Aircraft Maintenance Man. He returned to construction at the close of the war. He joined the Lubbock Public Schools as Director of Physical Plant in 1952. He served in this position until his retirement in August 1971. He served as a member of Methodist Hospital Auxiliary and Ranching Heritage Center. He was a lifetime sponsor of Cal Farley's Boys Ranch. He is survived by his daughter, Helen Crawf ord, of Trinity; seven grand-children; four great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and a large number of friends. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Feb. 12, 2005, at 10 a.m., at Sanders Funeral Home Memorial Chapel with Rev. Robert Storrs officiating. Burial will be in the Rochester Cemetery in Rochester at 2 p.m. on Saturday under the care of Sanders Funeral Home.
