BURLINGTON - William Desmond Thompson Sr., 89, went home to be with the Lord Sunday, June 8, 2014, at his home.
He was born July 13, 1924 in Alamance County to the late William Lonnie and Ruth Barber Thompson and was the husband of 70 years to Helen Rachel Thompson, of the home.
Desmond served in the U.S. Army during World War II. After retiring from Glen Raven Mills, he was employed with Associated Microscope Inc. He was a longtime member of People's Memorial Christian Church where he previously served as Deacon and was a member of the Lightbearer's Sunday School Class. He was also a member and past president of the A.O. Civitan Club. Desmond enjoyed working on cars, camping and spending time with his family. He left a lasting impression on many lives and will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his wife of the home; sons, William "Bill" Desmond Thompson Jr. and wife Sandra and Tim Thompson and wife Karen, all of Burlington; grandchildren, Tracey Thompson Payne and husband Rod, Melissa Wade and husband Chad, Elizabeth Huffines and husband Jason, Stephanie Enoch and husband Chris and Landon Thompson and wife Lacey; great-grandchildren, Hali Payne, Lexi Payne, Kaison Wade, Ethan Wade and Piper Leigh Enoch; sister, Barbara Bryant and husband Arnold "Mo" of Elon; brothers, Roger G. Thompson and wife Brenda of Altamahaw and Ronnie Thompson and wife Peggy of Burlington.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Marie Huffines and Jane Beckom.
The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 11, 2014, at People's Memorial Christian Church by the Rev. John Shields, with the burial to follow in Alamance Memorial Park.
