Obituary for Virginia Smith Clark
Alice Virginia Smith Clark, previously of 5163 Highway 15 South, passed away on June 11 after a short illness. She was 94. Virginia was born on March 23, 1922 and was the fourth child of Flora (Peaster) and Jep Smith. As a child and youth, they lived in the Bevill Hill and Lynn Creek communities. She attended school at Beth Eden Community School.
She married Earl Clark (Clark Brothers’ Auto Parts) in 1940, moving near Earl’s parents’ home in the Flower Ridge community (Highway 15 South), where she lived continuously until late April of this year when she moved to Atwood Personal Care home near Noxapater. Virginia and Earl enjoyed a marriage of 58 years before he predeceased her in 1999. Their first child, a daughter Marie, died in 1962 at the age of 19. She is survived by her son The Rev. Thomas Clark of Jackson (Susan), two granddaughters Susan Marie Clark Bares (Brett) who lives in New Orleans, Louisiana, and Margaret Kathleen Clark (engaged to Will Davies) who lives in Austin, Texas. She is also survived by two brothers, Bobby Woodrow Smith (Meridian, Mississippi) and Willice Curtis Smith (Louisville). Two sisters and three brothers predeceased her.
Virginia was a faithful member of Flower Ridge United Methodist Church (Highway 15 South) for 75 years. She loved gardening, both flowers and growing her own vegetables. Passersby often noticed her yard for its many flowers. Until two months ago, she still did most of the tending herself, often crawling on her hands and knees rather than having to bother bending repeatedly.
Virginia was a self-taught seamstress. She enjoyed quilting, crocheting, growing her own vegetables and canning them. When she moved from her home, she left two chest freezers full of frozen vegetables. She worked for several years in Western Auto and Elmore General Store in Louisville. After Earl retired, they tended the children of several local families in their home.
She took great interest and pride in her two granddaughters, whom she loved very much.
The family wishes to thank the management and staff of Atwood Personal Care Home and the doctors and staff of Winston Medical Center who gave devoted care for her last months and days.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. on Thursday, June 16, 2016, in the Nowell-Massey Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Bryan Carrubba officiating. Visitation will be the day of the service at Nowell-Massey Funeral Home from 2 p.m. until service time. Interment will follow in Flower Ridge United Methodist Church Cemetery.
