88, of Scottsdale, AZ died on June 14, 2016 at home with family beside him. He was born August 28, 1927 in Chicago, Illinois to parents Edward and Kathleen McDonnell. As a child, Ted spent summers with relatives in Canada, where he worked on his uncle's farm outside Stratford, Ontario every August, and also developed a love of ice hockey. While attending St. Bernard elementary school and St. Rita high school on the Southside of Chicago, Ted delivered The Chicago Times, was a Western Union telegram delivery boy and an usher at the Balaban and Katz Southtown Theater. Upon his 17th birthday and with his father's agreement, he joined the Navy and was sent to the Seabee base at Camp Endicott for deep sea and shallow diving school. From Port Hueneme, CA, Ted was part of a task force of 95 ships sailing for Hawaii, joining more ships there for the eventual April 1, 1945 invasion of Okinawa. There Ted spent time with the 14th, 19th and 147th Seabee battalions. After being discharged from the Navy, Ted attended Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa, graduating in 1953. While teaching history at Mendel Catholic High School on the Southside of Chicago, he met and married the love of his life, Judy Prendergast, and together they raised 6 children. Ted joined Connecticut General Life Insurance Co. in 1962, working in the estate analysis field, and in 1969 received his C.L.U. designation in Washington, D.C. In 1972, Ted was named the General Agent with the Aetna Life Insurance Company in Phoenix, AZ and it was "wagons west" for the family. Following affiliations with the independent insurance agency of the Associated Grocers of Arizona and Smitty's, Ted retired in 1992, and he and Judy spent the next several years traveling in the British Isles, Europe and Turkey. For the past 21 years, he followed Valley planning and zoning developments as Co-Founder and Vice President of Business Real Estate Weekly, and was supportive and involved in the publication's growth and success. To the end, Ted remained a loyal, die-hard supporter of his Chicago White Sox, Chicago Blackhawks and "Chicago" Cardinals. Always a believer in contributing one's time, talents and efforts to the community, over the past 44 years Ted served as a member and president of the OLPH Home & School Association, member and president of OLPH Parish Council, member and two-time president of Men of OLPH, member for 6 years of the Diocesan School Board and 4-year member of the City of Scottsdale Budget and Finance Committee. Ted was a loving husband and proud father, and a devoted and very involved grandpa. He is preceded in death by Judy, his wife of 40 years, his sister Catherine "Pat" Mandel and sister-in-law Patricia Prendergast. He is survived by his children Kathleen (Jeff Zywicki), Joseph (Rosetta), Susan (Steve Williams), Terry, Felice (Kevin McCarthy) and Brigid (John Borst); his grandchildren Alexandra, JT and Kevin Zywicki, John Borst II, Connor McDonnell, Kate and Christy McCarthy; his sister Mary Cannon, sister-in-law Mary Prendergast, and nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held from 5:00-8:00PM, with Rosary at 7:00PM, Wednesday, June 22 at Messinger Mortuary, 7601 E. Indian School Rd., Scottsdale. A Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, June 23 at 10AM at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, 3801 N. Miller Rd., Scottsdale. Burial to follow at St. Francis Cemetery, 2033 N 48th St, Phoenix.
