He enlisted in the Army Corps in 1939, serving at Bolling Field, and during WWII he was stationed in Ireland, England, Germany and France with the 9th Air Force. During the years following the war he served as a member of the Civil Defense Unit in Brunswick. He was the Boy Scout troop leader for Brunswick and Burkittsville. He was president of the Church Council at St. John's, St. Mark's and St. Paul's. He was an officer and member of the Burkittsville Ruritan, President of the PTA in Brunswick and Chairman of the Democratic Party in Burkittsville. He served on President Kennedy's First Commission of Physical Fitness in Frederick, and was commander and member of the VFW Post 5282 in Middletown. He was sergeant in arms at Amvets Post 9 in Middletown, and commander and service officer of Post 282 in Woodsboro.
He is survived by a son, Mark D. and wife Judy Summers; daughters, Jennifer and Gail; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; and a step-great-grandson.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, Alan Kent Wiles.
A memorial service was held at the American Legion Post 282 in Woodsboro. Private interment was at the convenience of the family.
