Son of John and Clara (Waite) Nichols, Ernest Nichols came to Whidbey Island in 1900 and with his brother Charles worked at logging in the area of Langley. He married Phebe Boyer on December 24, 1909 in Seattle. They lived first in Aberdeen and then in Coupeville. In 1926 he began work as janitor in the Coupeville School District.

He was survived by two sons, Victor and Donald, both of Okanogan; one daughter, Mrs. Iona Biery of Bellingham; three brothers, Charles Nichols of Alaska, Roy Warner of Brewster, John Warner of Okanogan; four sisters, Mrs. May DeWitt of New York State, Mrs. Merta Holtyhouser of Mallott, Washington, Mrs. Laura Earley of Wenatchee, and Mrs. Mattie Hooper of Richmond, California.
