Martin Tracey born in Roscommon Ireland in 1817 and arrived in Melbourne in 1839. Four years later he went to Geelong where he engaged in business as a brewer and became possessed of considerable property locally. He was a J.P. and alderman of the town. He took an active part in public affairs especially in regard to educational matters, and was an ardent Protectionist and supporter of Sir Graham Berry until the Education Bill was passed. He was well known in Roman Catholic circles, assisting in the establishment of churches, convents and schools of that denomination. He went to Wagga in 1881 continuing his business as a brewer until his death in 1896. He was buried in Geelong. His son Richard Nicholas Dowling Tracey who was one of the first natives of Victoria as Assistant Government Statist in this Colony.
