James Lamar Fulford, age 66, of Crestview, Fla., retired Florida Highway Patrol sergeant, died Saturday, July 4, 1998, at his residence after a long, courageous battle with cancer.

He was a member of Airport Road Church of Christ. Mr. Fulford was born in Slocomb, Ala., on March 25, 1932, to James Hilton and Florence Chapel Doswell Fulford and moved to DeFuniak Springs, Fla., at the age of one year.
Both of his parents preceded him in death.

After graduation from Walton High School, he entered the U.S. Army, where he served his country in Germany and Austria during the Korean conflict. While there he enjoyed sightseeing, skeet shooting and hunting.

During his career with the Florida Highway Patrol, his assignments took him to various locations from the Panhandle to central Florida. He spent his final 20 years in Crestview.

He retired on Sept. 27, 1991, with 35 years in service. After retirement, he enjoyed working in his scrap metal business, traveling and fishing. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to family and friends. His memory will be cherished by all who knew and loved him.

Survivors include his wife of 42 years of marriage, Nell Fulford of Crestview; daughter and son-in-law, Nina and Charles Blake of South Berwick, Maine; son and daughter-in-law, Mylon and Paula Fulford of Panama City, Fla., who also followed his father in the Florida Highway Patrol; four grandsons, Solomon and Elijah Blake, and Christopher and Benjamin Fulford. He is also survived by aunts, uncles and a host of cousins.

A time of visitation will be conducted at Whitehurst Funeral Home on Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m.

Funeral services will be conducted from Crestview Church of Christ on Airport Road on Wednesday, July 8, at 10 a.m. with Mr. Terry Hanna, minister, officiating. Interment will follow in Old Bethel Cemetery in Crestview. Mr. Fulford will be placed in the church at 9 a.m. -- one hour prior to services.

Florida Highway Patrol officers will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Floral tributes will be accepted at the funeral home.
