-------------------------
Civil War Veteran
Co A 38th Iowa Infantry
"The Martyr Regiment"
Co F 34th/38th Iowa Consolidated Infantry
------
From military records:
Jennings, John A. Age 21. Residence Fayette County, nativity Illinois. Enlisted Aug. 15, 1862. Mustered Sept. 6, 1862. Transferred to Company F, Thirty-fourth and Thirty-eighth Consolidated, Jan. 1, 1865.
Mustered out Aug. 15, 1865, Houston, Texas.
------
Jennings, Joseph M. Age 18. (possibly a brother) same residence, nativity enlisted same day into same company. Also transferred to 34th/38th and mustered out at Houston.
------
The regiment received this nickname because over a third of its number died of disease in the latter months of 1863 in Louisiana & Mississippi after the Siege of Vicksburg. Others were discharged disabled and died on the trip home or soon after. There were so few able-bodied men left that the 38th Iowa was combined with the 34th Iowa Infantry.
