Lorraine Alene Follett
October 20, 1927 - June 11, 2016
On June 11, 2016, Lorraine Alene Follett (Feurestein), passed away in Merced at age 88, having lived a long and meaningful life. She was well appreciated in Merced as a dedicated elementary teacher and faithful LDS church member.
Lorraine was born October 20, 1927. In 1948, Lorraine married Clarence Robinson Follett. She was a loyal wife until death and beyond. In their early years of marriage, Clarence served as an Army officer, while Lorraine taught at numerous schools, including military schools in Germany while they lived overseas. They later moved to Fresno and settled in Merced in 1967.
Lorraine was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, and her greatest pride was her family. Her hobbies included tending her beautiful rose garden, caring for various well-loved horses, cats and dogs, cooking, and vacationing with her beloved family in Santa Cruz, California.
She was a longtime member of the LDS church in Merced. Lorraine was welcoming to all and spent much of her life devoted to serving others in the Merced community and her ward. She often invited new ward members or visitors to Sunday dinner if she thought they needed someplace to go. She was also an energetic girl's camp leader.
She spent 35 years teaching young children in Merced at both Luther Burbank Elementary, Franklin Elementary and other schools in the area. Second grade was her favorite year to teach, in which her husband said he was a lifelong enrollee.
She was predeceased by her husband, Clarence Follett, and is survived by her children, Robin Follett of Provo, Utah; Miriam Follett of Merced; Matthew Follett (Amy) of Granite Bay, California; and Leslie Wilcox (Blaine) of Winton. She is also survived by 16 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.
A memorial will take place on Monday, June 20 at 9:00 a.m. at the LDS Church at 1080 East Yosemite Avenue, Merced and the burial will be conducted later at the Merced Cemetery at 1300 B Street. In lieu of flowers, donations for a scholarship being established in honor of Lorraine and Clarence Follett will be greatly appreciated for their dedication to teaching in Merced schools.
