NAMED TOP SCHOLAR-ATHLETE IN '84
20-year-old Wendy C. Cooper, a Peter-Kiewit Foundation Scholar and the top high school female scholar-athlete in the Omaha area in 1984.
Miss Cooper died Sunday of kidney failure at Clarkson Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska. She had been ill six weeks, a family spokesman said.
Miss Cooper, a sophomore at Iowa State University, was a 1984 graduate of Benson High School. Her father, Kenneth, teaches English and coaches the Benson golf teams.
Miss Cooper, the valedictorian of her class, participated in volleyball, basketball and track at Benson. She was active in student government and the National Honor Society.
The Greater Omaha Sports Committee selected her as the top female scholar-athlete for the 1983-84 school year.
Miss Cooper is survived by her parents, Kenneth and Sandra; a sister, Michelle; and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. W.M. Bergstadt, all of Omaha. Memorial services will be Wednesday at 11am at Kountze Memorial Lutheran Church 2650 Farnam Street in Omaha.
Benson athletic director Mike Rice said the family has suggested that memorials be made to a scholarship fund established in Miss Cooper's name. Memorials may be sent to the school, 5120 Maple Street, Omaha, NE.
