BOARDMAN - Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2015, at 11 a.m. at the Thompson-Filicky Funeral Home, 4221 Market St., Boardman, for John “Ray” Guerrier, 72, who died Friday, Jan. 2, 2015, at Caprice Health Care Center.
Ray was born Aug. 21, 1942, in Youngstown, the son of the late John C. and Ruth J. (Dalbey) Guerrier.
He graduated from South High School, class of 1961.
He served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War on the USS Sam Houston nuclear submarine and was a Navy Seal.
Following his service, Ray returned to Youngstown where, after a short time with Dictaphone, he worked as a technician at Ohio Bell. In 1990, Ray became the manager of technicians for AT&T in Akron, retiring in 1998 after 28 years of service.
He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America and the USS Sam Houston Alumni Association. He was a Boy Scout as a youth and later became an adult leader.
Ray is survived by his wife of 28 years, the former Janet L. Speerbrecher, whom he married on April 25, 1987; two sons, John R. Guerrier Jr. and James C. Guerrier, both of Austintown; a step-daughter, Dru Anness of Austintown; a brother, Attorney Charles E. (Janet) Guerrier of Birmingham, Ala.; seven grandchildren, Jesse Guerrier, Jonathan Guerrier, Ryan Bistarkey, Robert Coogle IV, Sarah Guerrier, Deanna Bistarkey and Caitlin Hillard; his former wife, Harriet A. Guerrier; and numerous nieces and nephews to whom he was close.
Besides his parents, Ray was preceded in death by a brother, David A. Guerrier.
Family and friends may call on Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2015, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Thompson-Filicky Funeral Home, Boardman, and one hour prior the service on Wednesday at the funeral home.
The family requests that material tributes take the form of contributions to the American Cancer Society, 525 North Broad St., Canfield, OH 44406, in memory of Ray.
