Mrs. Marion Johnson Ball, 87, died Friday, Nov. 21, 2008. A memorial service will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. in the Brown Chapel at Cypress Glen Retirement Community. A reception will follow. Mrs. Ball was a native of Hartford, Conn. She attended Virginia Intermont College, and was a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. At UNC she was a member of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority. For more than 45 years she was married to Charles Lee Ball Jr., who preceded her in death in 1987. During World War II, Charles served in the United States Navy, and Marion worked for Sikorsky Air Craft in Connecticut under Charles Lindberg. After World War II, they lived in Durham until 1964; Rocky Mount until 1968; then Danville, Va. for almost 20 years. During those years he was a tobacconist and she was a homemaker. Following retirement they made their home in River Bend, near New Bern. Marion and Charles were avid tennis players and golfers, traveled the world and loved to read. Marion was also an accomplished visual artist. She made her home in Winterville prior to moving to Cypress Glen six years ago. Mrs. Ball was a member of the United Methodist Churches in her resident cities and at the time of her death was a member of St. Peter's United Methodist Church in Morehead City. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Katie Ball, on Dec. 14, 2007. She is survived by her four sons and their families: Lee F. Ball and wife, Nancy, of Greenville, Charles "Chuck" Lee Ball III and wife, Lesley, of Kill Devil Hills, Donald H. Ball, of Chapel Hill, and Benjamin S. Ball and wife, Denise, of Newport. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, Lee J and wife, Cindy, Chris and wife, Cooper, Thomas, Charlie, Matthew, Caitlin, Ben, Michael; and great-grandson, Spencer.
