Daughter of Bertha and James Chapman, her father was keeper of the Fort Worden lighthouse. He died when she was 3 and the family moved to Whidbey Island in the area of Keystone and Crockett Lake. On June 26, 1947 she married George Wiley "G.W." Hesselgrave at Coupeville. The made their first home at Sumas, Washington, but soon moved to Coupeville.

She was a Girl Scout leader and she served 22 years on the Coupeville school board. She was also a talented artist.
