He graduated from Ashley High School. He served in the United States Navy for four years servicing submarines. Charles retired after thirty-eight years as an engineer for the Ann Arbor and Tuscola Saginaw Bay Railroads. He enjoyed RV'ing and hunting for mushrooms. He was a fix-it guy and when he fixed something, it was always better than it was before he fixed it. He was an excursion engineer, with his son, operating 1225 on several occasions.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia; son, Bryan Lumbert; step-sons, Steve, Tom, Bob, and Brian Springsdorf; eleven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sisters, Joan Peter, Marilyn Paterson, Janet Vanek, and Jackie Muscott; and brother-in-law, Russ Peters.
