Gary H. Hoornaert, son of Howard and Helen (Henne) Hoornaert, was born April 26, 1948 in Fessenden and grew up on the family farm south of Fessenden. He received his early education in a nearby country school and graduated from Fessenden High School in 1966. During his high school years, Gary worked as a farm laborer for several area farmers.
In 1967 he began working at the Manfred Farmers Union Elevator in Manfred. On November 24, 1967 he was married to Joan Gabel in New Rockford. They made their home in Fessenden for a short time before moving to Manfred in 1969. Gary was employed in the grain elevator business for over 40 years which included 28 years in Manfred, 10 years in Harvey and 2 years in Drake. He and Joan had resided in Harvey since 1996. They enjoyed many years with their children and their families.
Following their retirement, Gary and Joan remained busy working on projects which included helping dear friends make their home handicap accessible, painting their youngest grandson’s bedroom and repairing outside damage to their home due to a hail storm. These projects all involved hard work which was very rewarding and allowed Gary and Joan to spend time together.
Gary is survived by his wife of 48 years, Joan; 5 children, Paul (Dannette) Hoornaert of Stewartville, MN, Delon (Brian) Bunnell of Rochester, MN, Scott (Erica Knodel) Hoornaert of Harvey, Kevin (Kelly) Hoornaert of Eyota, MN and Jared (Hope) Hoornaert of Harvey; 11 grandchildren; 4 step-grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; 2 step-great-grandchildren; 2 sisters, Josephine (Willis) Wollman of San Angelo, TX and Janice (Russell) Kleinsasser of rural Chaseley; 2 brothers, Douglas (Cheryl) Hoornaert of Cooperstown and Steve (Annette) Hoornaert of Fessenden; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a granddaughter; several uncles, aunts and cousins, and two nephews.
