Joseph was the son of Alexander Melton (born in Indiana) and Sarah M. Niles (born in Indiana).

In the early days of England his family was very prominent, belonging to the class then known as gentry. The family Harris were gun makers to the King and in any collection of old firearms you may find that name. The family immigrated to Canada before the Revolutionary War. When war was declared they came to the Colonies by boat at night.

He married Fannie Brown on May 28, 1885. They had 9 children. They moved from Indiana to Trinidad Colorado in October 1885. They moved to Cimarron Co., OK in 1886; then on to Clayton, NM in 1899.

He is survived by wife, 4 sons, 2 sisters, and by 2 daughters-in-law.
