Mr. Gerald Franklin May, age 78, a resident of Washington, NC died Wednesday, April 20, 2016 at his home.
A funeral service will be held 11:00am Saturday, April 23, 2016 at the First United Methodist Church in Washington and will be officiated by Chaplain Jamin Bailey, Pastor Wallace O'Neal and Pastor Travis Boyd. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery. Nicholas Alligood, Ed Mercer, Richard Gerard, Paul Moore, Vance Moore, and Melvin Grant will serve as pallbearers and Dr. Raeford Pugh and Charlie Manning will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Mr. May was born in Franklin County on March 17, 1938 to the late John Albert Bertice May and Ruth Elizabeth Savage. He graduated from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill with a B.S. in Pharmacology. In 1962 he married the former Frances Arnold who preceded him in death August 27, 2002. On May 8, 2003 he married the former Gayle Dailey Gore who survives. Mr. May, a retired Pharmacist, was the owner of May’s Drug Store as well as a beloved member of the community. Mr. May loved to support his community charities. He loved to fish, work with wood and spend summers at his river home that he built.
Survivors include his wife, Gayle Dailey May, a daughter Kim Sawyer and husband Jerry Wright of Blounts Creek, four step daughters, Kelly Styons and husband Gary of Cedar Island, Myra Allen and husband James of Washington, Joni Faulkner and husband Ray of Washington, C. K. Ginn and husband Jeffery of Pinetown, four grandchildren, Morgan Alligood, Nicholas Alligood, Erica Alligood, Caitlin Alligood, ten step grandchildren, Sarah, Kathryn, Kyle, Lauren, Matt, Justin, Jennifer, Emily, Josh, Zach, two great grandchildren, Kade, Lincoln, a brother, Albert Bryce May and wife Shirley of Belhaven, and a sister-in-law Phyllis May of Rocky Mount.
He is preceded in death by a brother W. T. May and his best friend Dr. P. M. Moore. Flowers are appreciated or memorial contributions may be made to the Blind Center, P. O. Box 491, Washington, NC 27889, Marion L. Shepard Cancer Center, 1209 Brown Street, Washington, NC 27889, or the Sydney Volunteer Fire Department, 6755 N. Savannah Road, Belhaven, NC 27810.
