Kirk Guy Ward, 81, of Orinda passed away peacefully at home on May 27, 2016.
Kirk was born May 29, 1934, in Bakersfield, CA to Vaughn M. Ward and Opal I. Chilton Ward of Chesaning, MI. He graduated from East Bakersfield High School in 1952, and in 1962 became a partner in Ward Ryder Realty, until he started his own company, WDC Corp, in Walnut Creek in 1983. He was a successful real estate developer for over fifty years, with residential and commercial properties in Santa Maria, Napa, the Bay Area, and Southern California.
Kirk will be remembered for his optimistic outlook, generous nature, and his entertaining stories of growing up in Bakersfield, working in Yosemite in his teens, and attending college at UC Santa Barbara (Class of '57). He loved golf and the "Bakersfield Sound", and valued his many friendships from Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and Claremont Country Club.
Survivors include his wife, whom he married August 6, 2005 in Orinda; daughter and son, and their mother; step-daughters; step-son; five grandchildren; and three step-grandchildren.
Kirk was preceded in death by his wife Betty Bofenkamp Nott Ward, whom he married May 12, 1973 in Incline Village, NV; step-daughter Patricia Nott Hansen of Truckee; and his brother Greg Ward of Tulare.
The family is respecting Kirk's wishes to not have a public memorial, and instead held a private family service. His ashes will be placed next to his parents graves in Historic Union Cemetery in Bakersfield.
