EX-SHERIFF OF COUNTY DIED SUDDENLY TODAY
T. Howard Lee, of Sugar Creek Township, Victim of Heart This Morning
LIFE-LONG RESIDENT OF COUNTY
Elected Sheriff of Shelby County on the Democratic Ticket in 1872 & Was Re-Elected to Second Term

Tilghman Howard Lee, 77 years old, ex-sheriff of Shelby county and one of the best known men of the county, died suddenly at his home, one-half mile west of Boggstown, in Sugar Creek township, at 9:30 o'clock this morning. Mr. Lee had been in failing health for two years, but he did not complain this morning. Death is thought to have been due to heart trouble.
Mr. Lee was sitting on the edge of a water tank in the yard at his home when the attack came. He was watching his son-in-law, Charles McDonald, work on the pump and make preparations to repair it. Mrs. Lee was standing near and Mr. Lee had just spoken to her, saying that they would get in their machine and go to Fairland and get a pump, to replace the old one. Mrs. Lee turned away and Mr. McDonald turned from his work and caught his father-in-law just in time to prevent him from falling to the ground. He died a few minutes later.
Mr. Lee had been a life-long resident of Shelby county, being born in Addison township, May 31, 1839. He was the third of five children born to Louis M. and Spicy (Campbell) Lee. His early life was spent on a farm and at the age of twelve years, he began working by the month and continued work among strangers for fourteen years.
February 23, 1865, he was married to Annie Hoop, a native of Moral township. Immediately after their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Lee began housekeeping on a farm in Sugar Creek township.
Mr. Lee had been a life-long democrat and took active part in every campaign. In the fall of 1872, he made the race and was elected sheriff of this county on the democratic ticket. His first term of office in that capacity was above reproach and as a testimonial of his efficiency, his friends insisted that he make the race for that office again in 1874. He was reelected for the second term and served the people of the county to the best of his ability. Following the second tenure of office, he returned to his farm and had since resided there. He has always been recognized as one of the most successful farmers in the county.
Funeral arrangements will be announced later. Stewart & Fix, undertakers in charge.
